Infant Car Seats – Which One is Right For Your Baby?
Choosing the right car seat for your newborn is a crucial purchase for parents. It’s crucial to know the distinctions between car seats for children and infant car seats.
Usually Group 0+ or i-Size (R129) baby car seats, these rear-facing seats are suitable from birth. They are often combined with a pram to create travel systems.
Group 0+
If you’re a mother of a newborn or infant car seat, an infant car seat is essential. It is important that the car seat you choose meets European safety standards. You can check for the E-mark to ensure that the seat is compliant with ECE R44/04 or iSize (which is being replaced by the previous regulation). This will allow you ensure that the seat will be safe for your child in a crash. Seats with the iSize certification are easier to install and offer greater protection against side impacts and can keep your child rear-facing longer.

It’s more expensive than the other seats, but it provides great protection and is a good value. Jasper found it comfortable for long trips and it looks more appealing than other seats we looked at also.
Group 3
A group 3 infant seat is a 3-in-1 car seat that can be used from birth to the booster stage. They start rearward-facing (some until your child is at least 9kg) and can later be turned around to face forwards – they can be used in this way until they reach the limit of 36kg.
These seats are typically very comfortable and offer good neck and head support. A lot of them have removable and machine washable padding for newborns to help keep them clean. One of the most effective models we have tested is the Nuna PIPA air Rx, even comes with two inserts, one made from sustainably-sourced materials, and the second made of organic cotton certified by GOTS, to keep your baby super cozy.
Along with having impressive crash test results, this model has an extremely user-friendly design, including a single-handed recline setting and a minimum of 12 headrest positions. It’s also easy to install using ISOFIX and has an easy-to-read colour change indicator to show you’ve got it secured.
We do not recommend changing seats fast, since children who are in the lower limits can be more susceptible to injury in an accident. It’s better to keep your current seat until they reach their new limit. There are some very good alternatives to this group which we particularly like. Silver Cross Motion All Size 360, which will keep your child safe until their 12th birthday, which is an excellent choice for long-term use.
